💡 体力や気力を、根こそぎ持っていく形です。be tiring が形容なのに対し、take a lot out of ~ は差し引き——相手から抜き取ったという絵が違い。主語は出来事——試合・引っ越し・看病・長旅など。take it out of ~ の形でも同じです。

意味〜を出しきる

  • There was just no other way to get it all out of your system.
  • Shout once and get it out of your system.

💡 溜めていたものを、残らず吐き出す形です。forget が忘却なのに対し、get ~ out of one's system は排出——出しきるまで終わらないのが違い。system が「体の中」。怒り・悔しさ・言いたいことに使い、やめさせるのではなく、やらせる側の言い方です。

an insurmountable obstacle

意味越えられない壁

  • Reid the Master Swordsman is not an insurmountable obstacle.
  • Cost is not an insurmountable obstacle here.

💡 どうやっても越せない、と断じる形です。a big problem が規模なのに対し、insurmountable は不可能——手段が無いのが違い。surmount が「乗り越える」。否定文で使うと励ましになるので、not an insurmountable ~ の形が実用的です。

with one's tail between one's legs

意味しっぽを巻いて

  • You're back with your tail between your legs?
  • He came back with his tail between his legs.

💡 負けて、しょんぼり戻ってくる形です。give up が断念なのに対し、tail between one's legs は姿——きまりの悪さが見えるのが違い。怯えた犬の絵から来た言い方。come back / walk away と組みます。

bring disgrace to ~

意味〜の名を汚す

  • Such a thing would bring disgrace to any knight.
  • That would bring disgrace to the whole team.

💡 その肩書きに、泥を塗る形です。embarrass が気まずさなのに対し、bring disgrace to ~ は不名誉——集団や役職に及ぶのが違い。grace(品位)の反対が dis-grace。硬い語なので、式辞や戒めの文脈で使われます。

come to regret ~

意味〜を後悔することになる

  • I truly hope you won't come to regret those words.
  • You may come to regret signing so quickly.

💡 いまは分からないが、いずれ悔やむ形です。regret が現在の後悔なのに対し、come to regret ~ は将来——時間差があるのが違い。come to + 動詞は「だんだんそうなる」という型で、come to understand / come to like とも使えます。

意味〜を敵に回す

  • The very same one who made enemies of everyone in that hall.
  • Don't make enemies of the people who approve it.

💡 味方であり得た相手を、敵にしてしまう形です。fight が交戦なのに対し、make enemies of ~ は関係——自分の言動が招いたのが違い。make an enemy of + 単数の形もあり、相手が一人なら単数にします。

意味勢いに乗って言う・やる

  • He was riding purely on momentum when he spoke them.
  • The whole plan was riding on momentum.

💡 考えより先に、勢いで進む形です。be excited が高揚なのに対し、ride on momentum は推進力——自分で漕いでいないのが違い。momentum が「惰性・勢い」。褒めにも、たしなめにも使えます。

意味〜の身を案じる

  • I'm also concerned for their well-being.
  • We're concerned for the crew's well-being.

💡 相手が無事かどうかを、気にかける形です。worry about ~ が心配なのに対し、be concerned for ~'s well-being は配慮——落ち着いて硬いのが違い。for と about で意味が分かれ、for なら案じる、about なら関心がある。

意味〜をおおいに助ける

  • And that knowledge alone helps us immensely.
  • Your notes helped us immensely.

💡 程度を強めて、助かったと言う形です。help a lot が口語なのに対し、immensely は硬い強調——書き言葉向きなのが違い。immense が「広大な」。enjoy / appreciate / benefit とも組みます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第72話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Would you mind ~ing?(〜していただけますか)

With that said, would you mind letting me down?

相手の負担をうかがう、丁寧な依頼の形です。Could you ~? が依頼なのに対し、Would you mind ~ing? は迷惑の確認——直訳は「気になさいますか」なのが違い。答え方に注意——引き受けるときは No.(構いません)、断るときが Yes. になります。mind のあとは必ず ~ing。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

You need only + 原形(〜してくださるだけで結構です)

You need only tell them that you found me.

相手の手間を、最小限に切り分ける形です。Just tell them ~ が口語なのに対し、You need only ~ は文語——改まった場に向くのが違い。need が助動詞として働くので、only のあとは原形——to は付けません。依頼を軽く見せたいときに効きます。

I won't pretend (that) ~(〜のふりをするつもりはない)

I won't try to pretend like I know what's really going on.

知らないことを、先に認めてしまう形です。I don't know が告白なのに対し、I won't pretend ~ は宣言——取り繕わないと決めたのが違い。話し言葉では pretend like、書き言葉では pretend that が普通です。この一言を置くと、そのあとの意見が通りやすくなります。

⭐ あの戦いは彼から多くを奪った——ユリウスの消耗を、スバルが言い表した一言です。体力や気力を、根こそぎ持っていく——という形です。be tiring が「疲れる」と、性質を述べるのに対し、take a lot out of ~ は差し引き——相手の中から抜き取ったという絵になるところが違います。主語になるのは「出来事」——試合・引っ越し・看病・長い会議・時差のある移動。人を主語にはしません。The trip took a lot out of me. で「あの旅行でだいぶ消耗した」。a lot のところは入れ替えが利き、take everything out of ~(すべて奪う)、take something out of ~(それなりに堪える)と、程度を調節できます。短くした take it out of ~ も同じ意味で、That really takes it out of you. なら「あれは応えるよね」。労をねぎらう言い方として、そのまま使えます。紛らわしいのがtake it out on ~(〜に八つ当たりする)。of は消耗、on は八つ当たり と分けると混ざりません。
