🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

not so much A as B(A というより B だ)

You aren't concerned about his safety so much as you're concerned that he'll slow us down.

B, not A が否定なのに対し、not so much A as B は比重——A も少しはあるのが違い。

PATTERN 2

I suspect that's not all there is to it, given his current situation.

PATTERN 3

This utterly burdensome situation had better not happen again.

not の位置に注意——had better not で、had not better とは言いません。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

give in to peer pressure

いまは大人の職場でも普通に使います——The whole team said yes, so I gave in to peer pressure.(全員が賛成したので、押し切られた)。give in to ~ の形は応用が広く、temptation(誘惑)/ demands(要求)/ despair(絶望)と組みます。紛らわしいのがgive up(あきらめる)。
