意味〜を知らされている

  • It was a secret that I was not trusted to be privy to.
  • Only two of us were privy to the figures.

💡 内輪の話に、加えてもらっている形です。know が知識なのに対し、be privy to ~ は立場——知らされる側に選ばれたのが違い。private と同じ語根で、秘密・交渉・計画と組みます。否定形で使うと、疎外感がよく出ます。

there is no option but to ~

意味〜するよりほかにない

  • I know she can be trusted, or that there is no option but to trust her.
  • There was no option but to postpone.

💡 選択肢を数えたうえで、一つしか残らない形です。have to ~ が義務なのに対し、there is no option but to ~ は消去法——ほかを検討したのが違い。but が「〜以外」という古い用法。後ろは to + 原形で、no choice but to ~ も同じ形です。

bet on ~ being true

意味〜が本当だと賭ける

  • My only option is to bet on that being true.
  • We're betting on the forecast being right.

💡 確かめきれないものに、賭ける形です。believe が信用なのに対し、bet on ~ は賭け——外れる覚悟があるのが違い。on のあとは名詞か動名詞——bet on it being true のように意味上の主語を挟めます。

in one's presence

意味〜の前で

  • Please don't make me feel any more pathetic in your presence.
  • He never says that in her presence.

💡 その人の目の前で、という改まった言い方です。in front of ~ が位置なのに対し、in one's presence は格式——相手の存在が重いのが違い。presence が「居あわせること」。in the presence of ~ の形もよく使われます。

convey ~ to …

意味〜を…に伝える

  • My feelings are exactly what I conveyed to you last night.
  • Please convey our thanks to the team.

💡 気持ちや意向を、そのまま届ける形です。tell が伝達なのに対し、convey は運搬——中身を損なわずに運ぶのが違い。もとの意味は「運ぶ」——コンベヤーと同じ語です。挨拶・謝意・遺憾と組む硬い語です。

be long over

意味とっくに終わっている

  • I assumed that that conversation was long over.
  • That argument is long over.

💡 終わってから、ずいぶん経っている形です。be finished が完了なのに対し、be long over は経過——蒸し返された感じが違い。long が「とうに」。long gone / long forgotten と、同じ型で応用できます。

be adjourned

意味散会とする

  • On that note, this little meeting of ours is adjourned.
  • The session is adjourned until Monday.

💡 会をいったん閉じる、という宣言の形です。end が終了なのに対し、adjourn は中断——また開く前提なのが違い。裁判や議会の用語で、冗談めかして日常に使うと効きます。

意味狙われる身になる

  • What did you do to put a target on your back?
  • That memo put a target on his back.

💡 自分から、狙われる理由を作る形です。be in danger が状態なのに対し、put a target on one's back は原因——自分の行いが招いたのが違い。背中に的を貼るという絵。職場の話でも比喩として使えます。

strive to be ~

意味〜であろうと努める

  • I strive to be a woman of convenience.
  • We strive to be easy to work with.

💡 そうあり続けようと、努力する形です。try が試みなのに対し、strive は継続——終わりがないのが違い。過去形は strove / striven。企業の理念文で最もよく見る動詞の一つです。

out of bounds

意味度を越している

  • You told me you'd give me any reward, as long as it wasn't out of bounds.
  • That question was out of bounds.

💡 越えてはいけない線の、外側という形です。not allowed が禁止なのに対し、out of bounds は区域——線が引いてあるのが違い。もとは競技の「場外」。話題や冗談にも同じ言い方を使います。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第75話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

However, do you not feel ~?(とはいえ、〜とは思われませんか)

However, do you not feel that's a bit too selfish?

反論を、問いのかたちで差し出す形です。That's selfish. が断定なのに対し、do you not feel ~? は打診——判断を相手に返すのが違い。don't you feel を縮めない do you not は、格式ばった響きになります。答えは Yes が「思う」——否定疑問でも中身は変わりません。

even if ~ doesn't mean …(たとえ〜でも…とは限らない)

Even if getting her back doesn't mean she'll remember who I am.

望みが叶っても、その先は別だと断る形です。but ~ が逆接なのに対し、even if ~ は譲歩——先に最悪を認めているのが違い。doesn't mean … が「イコールではない」——二つを切り離す働きをします。希望を語りながら、過度な期待を避けるときに使えます。

Well, then, what other choices do we have in your mind?

代案を出せ、と押し返す形です。We have to do it. が断定なのに対し、What other choices do we have? は反問——相手に球を返すのが違い。形は疑問文でも、実質は主張——「ほかに無いでしょう」という含みです。本気で案を募るときにも使えるので、口調で意味が決まります。

⭐ 自分だけが知らされていなかった——ユリウスが静かに言い当てた一言です。内輪の話に、加えてもらっている——という形です。know が「知っている」と、知識の有無を言うのに対し、be privy to ~ は立場——知らせる側に選ばれたかどうかを言うところが違います。private と同じ語根で、「内輪の」が芯にあります。だから組む名詞も決まっていて——a secret / the details / the negotiations / a decision。いちばん出番が多いのは否定形です。I wasn't privy to that conversation. で「その話には入れてもらえなかった」——責めずに疎外を言えるので、職場の込み入った場面で重宝します。形容詞なので be 動詞とセット——privy something とは言えません。必ず to を挟むこと。紛らわしいのがbe aware of ~(気づいている)。privy は知らされた、aware は気づいた ——前者は誰かが教えた、後者は自分で気づいたと分けると混ざりません。
