💡 悪い知らせの当たりを、弱める形です。be gentle が態度なのに対し、soften the blow は緩衝——打撃そのものは避けられないのが違い。blow が「一撃」。悪い知らせを伝える側が使う言い方で、cushion the blow でもほぼ同じです。

意味先走る

  • I might be getting ahead of myself.
  • Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

💡 順番を飛ばして、先の話をしてしまう形です。be hasty が拙速なのに対し、get ahead of oneself は前のめり——自分の足より先に頭が行っているのが違い。Let's not get ahead of ourselves. は「気が早いですよ」——会議で話を戻す一言になります。

意味主張を裏づける

  • I could substantiate his claims and read it myself.
  • Nothing in the file substantiates his claims.

💡 言い分に、証拠を添える形です。prove が証明なのに対し、substantiate は補強——主張が先にあるのが違い。substance(中身)から来た語——空の主張に中身を入れるという絵です。報道と法務でよく使われます。

let on

意味口に出す・そぶりを見せる

  • Your condition seems more serious than you let on.
  • He knew, but he never let on.

💡 知っていることを、外に漏らす形です。tell が伝達なのに対し、let on はにじませる——隠すつもりだったのが違い。否定形で使うのが基本で、than you let on は「口に出している以上に」という決まった形です。

意味まさにそのとおり

  • I can't say I know who this famous detective is, but yep, hit the nail on the head.
  • Your summary hit the nail on the head.

💡 的をぴたりと射ているという形です。be right が正しさなのに対し、hit the nail on the head は正確さ——言い当て方まで見事なのが違い。釘の頭を一発で打つという絵。相手の発言をほめる相づちとして使えます。

意味〜をどう見ますか

  • Miss Ram, what do you make of all this?
  • What do you make of the new figures?

💡 相手の見立てを、求める形です。What do you think? が意見なのに対し、What do you make of ~? は解釈——材料が目の前にあるのが違い。make of ~ が「〜から意味を作る」。資料や事実について尋ねるときの定型です。

catch oneself ~ing

意味気づくと〜している

  • I often catch myself watching you without even realizing.
  • I caught myself humming it.

💡 無意識の行いに、ふと気づく形です。notice が知覚なのに対し、catch oneself ~ing は自己発見——やっている途中で気づくのが違い。catch が「捕まえる」——自分を現行犯で捕まえるという絵です。

make ~ out to be …

意味〜を…に仕立てる

  • Why are you making me out to be the bad guy for that?
  • The article made him out to be a villain.

💡 実際とは違う人物像に、描き立てる形です。call が呼称なのに対し、make ~ out to be … は印象操作——言い方で像を作っているのが違い。抗議の場面でよく使い、受け身の be made out to be ~ もよく見ます。

意味最悪の場合

  • We're imagining the worst-case scenario, but it could be nothing.
  • Let's plan for the worst-case scenario.

💡 起こりうる中で、いちばん悪い筋書きという形です。a problem が支障なのに対し、the worst-case scenario は想定——まだ起きていないのが違い。ハイフンで worst-case と形容詞にするのが正式。計画や危機管理の文書で頻出します。

意味慎重に扱われる

  • Books of the Dead are precious and should be handled with great care.
  • The samples must be handled with great care.

💡 壊れやすいものとして、そっと扱う形です。be careful が注意なのに対し、be handled with care は扱い方——物や案件が主語になるのが違い。荷物の「取扱注意」がこの言い方。人の気持ちや交渉にも同じ形を使います。

第76話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Apologies, but ~(恐れ入りますが〜)

Apologies, but if your plan is to continue searching tomorrow and beyond ...

断りを入れてから、反対を述べる形です。Sorry, but ~ が口語なのに対し、Apologies, but ~ は書き言葉寄り——改まった場で使うのが違い。I apologize の名詞形を、単独で置く言い方で、複数形 Apologies にするのが決まり。メールの書き出しにもそのまま使えます。

PATTERN 2

Even so, wasn't it thanks to ~ that …?(それでも〜のおかげではないですか)

Even so, wasn't it thanks to her that we all got through the dunes?

相手の否定を認めたうえで、功を持ち出す形です。But she helped us. が反論なのに対し、Even so, wasn't it thanks to ~? は譲歩つきの反問——相手の言い分を先に認めるのが違い。Even so が「そうだとしても」。否定疑問にすると、同意を促す働きが出ます。擁護の場面で、いちばん角の立たない形です。

PATTERN 3

no + ~ing(〜はなしにして)

But no carrying it alone, getting angry alone.

動詞を名詞のまま並べて、禁じる形です。Don't ~ が命令なのに対し、no + ~ing は掲示の文体——主語も動詞も無いのが違い。No smoking / No parking と同じ形で、短く言い切れるのが利点。いくつも並べられるので、約束ごとを列挙するときに向きます。

⭐ 言葉を選ぶな、そのまま言え——書庫に呼ばれた場面での一言です。悪い知らせの当たりを、弱める——という形です。be gentle が「やさしくする」と、態度の話なのに対し、soften the blow は緩衝——打撃そのものは避けられないところが違います。blow は「一撃」。殴られるのは決まっていて、せめて痛みを減らす、という絵です。使うのは、悪い知らせを伝える側。We announced it early to soften the blow. なら「衝撃を和らげるため、早めに知らせた」——値引き・前もっての予告・代案が、the blow を和らげる手段としてよく出てきます。cushion the blow もまったく同じ意味で、どちらも新聞でよく見ます。この台詞のように否定で使うと、「回りくどいのはやめてくれ」という催促になります。紛らわしいのがbreak the news(知らせを切り出す)。break は伝えること自体、soften は伝え方 と分けると混ざりません。
