意味様子がおかしい

💡 いつもと何かが違う、と感じる形です。be strange が異常なのに対し、seem off は違和感——どこが違うか言えないのが違い。off が「ずれている」。人にも数字にも味にも使えて、This milk tastes off. なら「この牛乳、傷んでる」。

be too soft

意味甘すぎる

  • Ms. Emilia, you're too soft.
  • You're too soft on them.

💡 厳しさが足りない、と評する形です。be kind が親切なのに対し、be too soft は批判——甘やかしているのが違い。be soft on ~ と続ければ「〜に甘い」。躾や処分の話でよく使われます。

to my face

意味面と向かって

  • Tell me again to my face that you forgot!
  • He said it to my face.

💡 本人の目の前で、はっきり言う形です。directly が直接なのに対し、to my face は対面——逃げ場がないのが違い。陰口の反対として使い、Say it to my face. は「面と向かって言ってみろ」。

chase ~ down

意味〜を追いつめる

  • Then, once we chased Felt down ...
  • I chased down the missing invoice.

💡 逃げるものを、追いかけて捕まえる形です。follow が追随なのに対し、chase ~ down は捕捉——捕まえるまで行くのが違い。物にも使えて、書類や答えを「探し出す」意味にもなります。

come after ~

意味〜を狙って追ってくる

  • Meili's older sister came after me.
  • The press came after him for weeks.

💡 こちらを目がけて、向かってくる形です。follow が後を追うなのに対し、come after ~ は敵意——狙われているのが違い。順番の「〜の後に来る」の意味もあるので、文脈で読み分けます。

become good friends with ~

意味〜と仲良くなる

  • Then Ram and Rem surely became good friends with you as well.
  • They became good friends with the new team.

💡 知り合いから、親しい間柄になる形です。meet が面識なのに対し、become good friends は過程——時間がかかっているのが違い。with を落とさないこと。make friends with ~ もほぼ同じです。

be there for ~

意味〜のそばにいてやる

  • I hope and believe that you'll always be there for me.
  • Call me — I'll be there for you.

💡 必要なときに、味方としている形です。help が援助なのに対し、be there for ~ は存在——何もしなくても、いることが支えなのが違い。別れや励ましの場面で使う、いちばん短い約束の言葉です。

意味ただちに

  • Beatrice, get away from him at once!
  • Please reply at once.

💡 間を置かず、すぐにという形です。soon が近い将来なのに対し、at once は即時——猶予が無いのが違い。「一度に・同時に」の意味もあり、all at once なら「いっぺんに」。

complain about ~

意味〜について文句を言う

  • Although she did complain about it the entire time.
  • He complained about the noise.

💡 不満を、口に出す形です。say が発言なのに対し、complain は苦情——相手に直してほしいのが違い。about のあとは名詞か ~ing。complain to + 人 で「〜に苦情を言う」になります。

the special treatment

意味特別扱い

  • You rubbed my neck, so what's with the special treatment?
  • Why does he get the special treatment?

💡 ほかと違う扱いを受けることを指す形です。kindness が親切なのに対し、the special treatment は区別——不公平に見えるのが違い。皮肉まじりで使うことが多く、get / receive と組みます。

第77話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Why would you ~?(どうして〜なんてしたの)

Why would you do this?

信じがたい、と理由をただす形です。Why did you ~? が事実確認なのに対し、Why would you ~? は動機——そんなことをする人だと思えないという含みが違い。would が「あえてそうする」気持ちを表します。強い言い方なので、責めたくないときは Why did you ~? にすること。

How do we decide whether ~?(どうやって〜かを見分ける)

How do we decide whether he's real or not?

判断の方法そのものを問う形です。Is he real? が可否なのに対し、How do we decide whether ~? は手だて——基準がまだ無いのが違い。whether のあとは文で、文末に or not を足せます。if に置き換えられる場面も多いですが、or not を付けるなら whether が安全です。

I was hoping Ram was mistaken about all of this.

そうであってほしかった、と過去の願いを言う形です。I hoped ~ が事実なのに対し、I was hoping ~ は進行形——ずっとそう願っていたのが違い。言外に「そうではなかった」という落胆がにじみます。依頼にも使えて、I was hoping you could help. なら「お願いできないかと思って」——とても丁寧な切り出しになります。

⭐ 様子が変だったから話しに来た——詰め寄られた場面での、エミリアの弁明です。いつもと何かが違う、と感じる——という形です。be strange が「変だ」と、性質を断じるのに対し、seem off は違和感——どこがどう違うのかは、言えていないところが違います。この off は「ずれている」。あるべき位置から少しずれた、という感覚です。だから使える相手が広い——人・数字・味・音・色、どれにも使えます。This milk tastes off. なら「この牛乳、傷んでる」、Something seems off with the report. なら「報告書に何か引っかかる」。人について言うときは、体調にも機嫌にもかかります。You seem off today. は「今日、なんか元気ないね」——やわらかく踏み込めるので、声をかける最初の一言に向きます。紛らわしいのがbe off(出かける・休みだ)。seem off は違和感、be off は不在 ——I'm off today. は「今日は休みです」と分けると混ざりません。
