Episode Summary

This time Subaru starts with a plan: earn the household's trust, and find the shaman. He gets a magic lesson from the cat spirit and discovers his one usable spell, hears the legend of the Witch of Envy, and works himself past the point of sense trying to be useful. When it finally breaks him, he cries himself out in the half-elf's lap and wakes lighter. Then the girl in the library gives him the one rule that matters: a curse needs physical contact — which means the answer is in the village.

out of the blue

  • Sorry to do that out of the blue.
  • She called me out of the blue after ten years.

晴れた空に落ちる雷から来た言い方(a bolt from the blue)。

  • The first one is to earn the trust of the staff here.
  • It took a year to earn the trust of the team.

win the trust of ~ もほぼ同じです。

03

be at stake

  • Besides, some important things are at stake here.
  • Her whole career is at stake.

04

be divided into ~

  • Magic users are divided into four categories.
  • The book is divided into three parts.

  • Long story short, you don't have very good control over your gate.
  • Long story short, we missed the train.

to make a long story short

  • It's more satisfying to hear a single thank you than to be subjected to sorry after sorry.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

it depends on whether or not ~(〜かどうかによる)

Basically, it depends on whether or not you use a gate.

it depends. whether or not はひとかたまりで、or not は文末へ回せます(whether you use a gate or not)。if には替えられません(× depends on if or not)。

PATTERN 2

What would it take to ~?(〜させるには何が要るのか)

What would it take to make somebody steal the Witch's name?

Why would someone ~? What would it take to ~? take はここでは「必要とする」交渉の場でもそのまま使えます——What would it take to close this today?(今日まとめるには何が要りますか)。

PATTERN 3

I did it because I wanted to help you, not because I was looking for an apology.

I didn't do it for ~ が否定から入るのに対し、~, not because … 順序を逆にした not because ~, but because …

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

be backed into a corner

be in trouble が「困っている」のに対し、be backed into a corner は「もう逃げ道がない」——選べる手が尽きたところまで含みます。 能動の back ~ into a corner なら「相手を追い詰める」——Don't back him into a corner.(逃げ道をふさぐな)は交渉の心得としてよく言われる一文です。紛らわしいのがhave one's back against the wall。
