Episode Summary

Becky invites herself over and works through every move she has learned from a television romance, while the man she is aiming at quietly treats the visit as an intelligence opportunity and the woman of the house misreads the whole thing as charming. Elsewhere, an agent who has taken on twice her own workload waits for one word of recognition, and gets a souvenir keychain instead.

01

Thank you for having me over.

  • Thank you for having me over.
  • Thank you for having me over last night.

Thank you for inviting me. Come over sometime!

02

Get a load of ~

  • Get a load of my room!
  • Get a load of this view!

Look at ~ が指さすのに対し、Get a load of ~ は驚かせにいく——自慢か呆れが入るのが違い。

03

This is my big chance!

  • This is my big chance!
  • The manager's away — this is my big chance!

a good chance が良い機会なのに対し、my big chance は人生の分かれ目——大きさが違うのが違い。

04

How about we ~?

  • How about we move into a much bigger house?
  • How about we split the bill?

Let's ~ が決定に近いのに対し、How about we ~? How about + 動詞ing?

05

take pity on ~

  • Is she taking pity on me or something?
  • Someone took pity on us and gave us a ride.

feel sorry for ~ が感情だけなのに対し、take pity on ~ は行動まで——何かしてやるのが違い。

06

be no match for ~

  • I guess I'm no match for you after all.
  • Our team was no match for theirs.

I have to do it. が義務なのに対し、do what I gotta do は開き直り——覚悟が入るのが違い。gotta は have got to のくだけた形。

08

be well-loved

  • I'm happy that he's so well-loved.
  • The shop is well-loved in the neighborhood.

09

have it bad for ~

  • He really has it bad for strong women!
  • He's had it bad for her since April.

10

It's all my fault.

  • No, it's all my fault.
  • Don't apologize — it's all my fault.

I'm sorry. It's all my fault. fault は「落ち度」で、mistake(間違い)とは別。It's not your fault.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Any friend of ~ is always welcome(〜

Any friend of my daughter's is always welcome here.

You're welcome here. of のうしろは所有格(a friend of my daughter's — 二重所有格)。Any friend of yours is a friend of mine.

PATTERN 2

Don't tell me you're ~(まさか〜なんじゃないよね)

Are you ~?

PATTERN 3

unless のうしろは現在形(× unless I will hit)。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

How about we ~?

Let's ~ が決めてしまっているのに対し、How about we ~? we + 動詞 と 動詞ing のどちらでも言えます——How about we meet at six? とHow about meeting at six?we だから、会議でも食事でもそのまま使えます——How about we start with the easy ones?What about ~? こちらは「〜しようよ」で、もう少し押しが強い——伺いが How about we ~?、誘いが Why don't we ~?

Thank you for having me over. / Get a load of ~ / How about we ~? / be no match for ~ / It's all my fault.

Any friend of ~ is always welcome(〜の友達ならいつでも歓迎)、Don't tell me you're ~(まさか〜なんじゃないよね)、主語 + don't 動詞 ~ unless …(…
