Episode Summary

A dog training session goes badly, a walk goes worse, and by the time the smoke clears the dog has pulled a puppy out of a burning building and pinned the man who lit it. None of that can be told at home, so the family hears only that he got wet. The award he receives instead is made of folded paper, and the lesson his handler finally gives him is that the work comes second.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

We're off.

  • All right, then. We're off.
  • We're off — see you at six.

We're leaving. が事実なのに対し、We're off. I'm off!

02

no ordinary ~

  • These are no ordinary stars.
  • That was no ordinary meeting.

not an ordinary ~ より強い言い方。

03

take ~ to the vet

  • Maybe I should take him to the vet.
  • We took her to the vet this morning.

go to the hospital が人なのに対し、the vet は動物専門——行き先が違うのがポイント。

04

make it out

  • Thankfully, no. They all made it out.
  • Everyone made it out before the roof fell.

make it home / make it in time も同じ make it です。

05

a year's supply of ~

  • And here's a year's supply of meat for this incredible hero dog!
  • They won a year's supply of coffee.

a lot of ~ が量なのに対し、a year's supply は期間で数える——どれだけ持つかを言うのが違い。a year's のアポストロフィが要ります(× a year supply)。

06

It's such a shame ~

  • It's such a shame I can't tell them what really happened.
  • It's such a shame you can't come.

It's such a shame ~ は残念——悪いことが起きたわけではないのが違い。 What a shame!

07

get dinner going

  • All right, time to get dinner going.
  • I'll get dinner going while you shower.

get the car going / get things going

08

deserve an award

  • I'd say those two deserve an award.
  • Whoever wrote this manual deserves an award.

09

I don't have time for that.

  • I don't have time for that.
  • Sorry, I don't have time for that today.

I'm busy. I don't have time for that.

10

a total accident

  • It was a total accident.
  • Breaking it was a total accident, I swear.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

I don't know what I would've done if ~(〜だったらどうなっていたか)

I don't know what I would've done if I'd lost you.

I'm relieved. would have + 過去分詞 / if + had + 過去分詞の仮定法過去完了。I'd lost は I had lost の縮約です。

PATTERN 2

動詞 + more than 主語 should have(〜しすぎてしまった)

Maybe I cut them up more than I should have.

too much が量なのに対し、more than I should have は基準との差——本来の適量を分かっているのが違い。should have + 過去分詞の過去分詞が省かれているのがこの形の特徴です(more than I should have cut)。

PATTERN 3

I'm so glad (that) ~(〜で本当によかった)

I'm so glad we decided to adopt you!

I'm so glad that ~ は理由つき——何がよかったかまで言うのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

make it out

鍵は make it。 だから、うしろの副詞を替えるだけで応用がききます——make it back / make it through / make it out alive。
