💡 colors は船の旗のこと。本当の旗を掲げることから「本性・本音をさらす」。悪い意味で使うことが多い表現です。

表現hinge ~ on …〜を…に懸ける
💡 hinge は「ちょうつがい」。hinge on ~ で「〜次第である」、他動詞で「〜を…に懸ける」。成否の分かれ目を語る語です。
例文
The whole deal hinges on one signature.
取引全体が一つの署名にかかっている。
The instructors at this establishment are second to none.
訳こちらの先生方は、どこにも引けを取りません。
表現second to none誰にも引けを取らない
💡 誰に対しても2番目ではないという形で「最高の・比類ない」。推薦文や広告でよく見るほめ言葉です。
例文
The service at this hotel is second to none.
このホテルのサービスは最高だ。
I suppose one could argue that her nosy nature is a weakness, but it stems from her intelligence.
訳詮索好きなのは短所とも言えますが、それは賢さから来ているんです。
表現stem from ~〜に由来する
💡 stem は「茎」。stem from ~ で「〜から生じる」。短所の根を長所に結びつけるこの答え方は面接でそのまま使えます。
例文
Most of his stress stems from his long commute.
彼のストレスの大半は長い通勤から来ている。
Your husband just mentioned your daughter is a bit of a picky eater, which begs the question, what kind of meals do you cook at home?
訳ご主人によると娘さんは好き嫌いがあるそうですが、そうなると、ご家庭ではどんな食事を作っているのか気になりますね。
表現beg the question〜という疑問が浮かぶ
💡 beg the question は本来「論点先取」だが、日常では「(当然)〜という疑問が生じる」の意味で広く使われます。which で前文を受けるのが定番です。
例文
The project is over budget, which begs the question: who approved it?
予算超過だ。となると、誰が承認したのかという疑問が浮かぶ。
He may not be the current headmaster, but my father still has sway here.
訳今の校長ではないにせよ、父はここでまだ影響力を持っている。
表現have sway影響力がある
💡 sway は「揺れ」から「支配力・影響力」。have sway (over ~) で「(〜に)にらみが利く」。権力関係を語る語です。
例文
Big donors have sway over the party's decisions.
大口献金者は党の決定に影響力を持つ。
Those who grovel at the feet of the powerful have no right to call themselves educators.
訳権力者の足元にひれ伏す者に、教育者を名乗る資格はない。

💡 grovel は「はいつくばる」。at the feet of the powerful と組んで「権力におもねる」を強く批判する文語的な言い回しです。

Would you be so kind as to ~? は最上級に丁寧な依頼。Could you ~? よりはるかに改まった響きで、メールや式典向きです。

As you are already well aware, ~(すでにご承知のとおり、〜)As you are already well aware, I'm not her biological mother, so at first, I spoiled her.
すでにご承知のとおり、私は実の母ではないので、最初は甘やかしてしまいました。
As you are (already) well aware は「よくご存じのとおり」。相手の知識を前提に話を進める改まった前置きで、ビジネスメールにも使えます。
他にも使える例:
It'd be wise for you to ~(〜した方が身のためだ)It'd be wise for you to watch that mouth of yours.
口は慎んだ方が身のためだぞ。
It'd be wise for you to ~ は「〜するのが賢明だ」。助言にも、ここでのように遠回しな脅しにもなる大人の言い方です。
