  • There are high hopes this visit will prove pivotal in easing tensions between neighboring countries.
  • The meeting proved pivotal in settling the dispute.

💡 あとから見て、そこが分かれ目だったと分かる形です。be important が重要なのに対し、prove pivotal は結果で決まる——まだ結論が出ていないのが違い。pivot は「回転の軸」。prove は「〜だと判明する」で、be より控えめに響きます。

02

意味〜という異名で呼ばれるようになる

  • Earning him the moniker, the "Herald of the Thaw."
  • The stadium earned the moniker "the Fortress."

💡 働きの結果として、呼び名がつくという形です。be called ~ が事実なのに対し、earn the moniker ~ は勝ち取ったもの——理由があるのが違い。moniker はくだけた「通称」で、報道の見出しによく出ます。nickname より軽い語です。

意味手段を選ばず

  • Make sure these scandals don't reach the west by any means necessary.
  • We will finish this by any means necessary.

💡 必要ならどんな方法でも使えという形です。somehow が「なんとかして」なのに対し、by any means necessary は許可——手段を問わないと明言しているのが違い。necessary が後ろから means を修飾する語順で、ここを入れ替えないのが決まりです。

04

worth one's salt

意味その名に値する

  • Any agent worth their salt relies on data and objectivity.
  • Any editor worth their salt would have caught that.

💡 その肩書きに見合う中身があるという形です。good が評価なのに対し、worth one's salt は最低限の資格——これ以下は名乗る資格がないのが違い。any + 職業 + worth their salt の形が定番で、そのあとに「当然〜する」が続きます。

05

consider facts over gut feelings

意味勘より事実で考える

  • A rookie like you needs to consider facts over gut feelings.
  • Investors have to consider facts over gut feelings.

💡 二つを並べて、どちらを取るかを示す形です。A over B が「BよりA」で、than とは違って前置詞——うしろが名詞なのが違い。gut feeling は「腹の底の感じ」=勘。gut instinct もほぼ同じ意味です。

07

preconceived notions

意味思いこみ

  • Forget your preconceived notions, and don't rationalize!
  • Come to the data without preconceived notions.

意味〜を心に留めておく

  • We need to be mindful of that thinking ourselves.
  • Be mindful of how this will sound to them.

💡 忘れずに、意識の隅に置いておく形です。be careful が用心なのに対し、be mindful of ~ は自覚——危険とは限らないのが違い。mind(心)+ fulで、bear ~ in mind とほぼ同じ。丁寧な注意書きにもよく使われます。

意味〜を踏まえて

  • In light of the threats made on his life, a robust security force is in place in the area.
  • In light of the new figures, we revised the plan.

💡 新しく分かったことに照らしてという形です。because of ~ が原因なのに対し、in light of ~ は判断材料——それを見て考え直したのが違い。light は「光」で、照らして見るのが元の絵。公式文書の定番です。

10

go off without a hitch

意味何ごともなく終わる

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第41話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Would you be comfortable with ~?(〜で納得できますか)

Would you be comfortable with that lame excuse?

相手の心づもりを、静かに問いただす形です。Is that OK? が可否なのに対し、Would you be comfortable with ~? は気持ち——断りやすくしているのが違い。would が仮の話にしていて、これがあるだけで一段丁寧になります。会議でも面接でもそのまま使えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Not everything is a matter of ~(何もかもが〜で決まるわけではない)

Not everything's a matter of black or white.

全部がそうだとは限らない、と部分否定する形です。Nothing is ~ が全否定なのに対し、Not everything is ~ は部分否定——そういう場合もあると残すのが違い。not + every / all / always は「すべてが〜なわけではない」で、ここは日本語と食い違いやすいところです。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

worth one's salt

Any editor worth their salt would have caught that.その職の人ならこうするはずだ、というやんわりした批判になるのが特徴です。紛らわしいのがbe worth it。

Would you be comfortable with ~?(〜で納得できますか)、Not everything is a matter of ~(部分否定)、Remind me, how long have you + 過去分詞?——問いただす・決めつけを外す・自覚させる型が並んでいます。

総合難易度:★★★★★(報道と議論の英語が中心)/英語学習価値:★★★★★(そのままニュースの読み方に移せます)/おすすめ度:★★★★★。by any means necessary / in light of ~ / go off without a hitch まで扱う、スパイファミリー第41話の上級版です。
