Episode Summary

A mother who has never quite worked out what normal looks like goes shopping for her daughter's sweets, catches a falling stranger in a department store, and finds herself in a borrowed uniform playing volleyball with a society of mothers. The stranger turns out to be the wife of the man her husband has spent a year trying to reach, and at home he has to decide whether an encounter that useful can really have been an accident.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

a high-risk, low-return target

  • She's considered a high-risk, low-return target.
  • For us, that market is a high-risk, low-return target.

02

be estranged from ~

  • Not to mention, she seems estranged from her husband and sons.
  • He's been estranged from his family for years.

03

a mere coincidence

  • Should I really believe this encounter was a mere coincidence?
  • It was no mere coincidence that they met.

04

I can't fathom ~

  • I can't fathom him using his wife for this.
  • I can't fathom why she agreed.

I don't understand が単純なのに対し、I can't fathom ~ は測りきれない——考えても届かないのが違い。

05

keep a small and exclusive circle around one

  • Much like her husband, she keeps a small and exclusive circle around her.
  • He keeps a small and exclusive circle around him.

have few friends が結果なのに対し、keep a circle around one は意図——自分で選んでいるのが違い。

06

involve oneself in politics

  • She rarely involves herself in politics after the party lost power.
  • He never involved himself in politics.

be interested in ~ が関心なのに対し、involve oneself in ~ は関与——動いているのが違い。

07

albeit very casually

  • I know I invited you to join us again, albeit very casually.
  • He agreed, albeit reluctantly.

  • Would she be upset if I denied her this?
  • I couldn't deny him the chance.

09

built up over time

  • But I'm sure there's some stress that's built up over time.
  • This is trust built up over time.

10

hard to say that I fully recommend ~

  • So it's hard for me to say that I fully recommend it.
  • It's hard to say that I fully recommend this route.

I don't recommend it. が否定なのに対し、hard to say that I fully recommend ~ は保留——逃げ道を残すのが違い。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Is there any way I could convince you to + 動詞の原形?(なんとか〜していただけませんか)

Is there any way I could convince you to come with me for a bit?

Could you ~? Is there any way I could convince you to ~?

PATTERN 2

Either way, I'll support her and keep my eye on things.

PATTERN 3

I'll never be satisfied unless I'm first in everything!

I want to be first. I'll never be satisfied unless ~ は執着——妥協しないと宣言するのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

a high-risk, low-return target

risk(払うかもしれないもの)と return(返ってくるもの)をhigh / low で組み合わせて、四通りの評価を作ります——high-risk, high-return(一か八か)、low-risk, low-return(手堅い)、low-risk, high-return(うまい話)。 紛らわしいのがnot worth it。
