🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第42話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。
PATTERN 1
Would you mind if I + 過去形?(〜してもかまいませんか)
Would you mind if I went to the Lady Patriots Society sometimes?
ときどき淑女愛国協会に行ってもかまいませんか。
相手に断る余地を残して、許しを求める形です。Can I ~? が直球なのに対し、Would you mind if I ~? は遠回し——迷惑かどうかを聞いているのが違い。うしろは過去形にすると丁寧さが増します。答え方に注意——いいですよ、は No(迷惑ではない)。
他にも使える例:
- Would you mind if I opened the window?(窓を開けてもかまいませんか)
- Would you mind if I brought a friend?(友人を連れて行ってもいいですか)
PATTERN 2
The more ~, the better(〜であればあるほどいい)
The more places you can go to relax outside this house, the better.
この家の外に息を抜ける場所が多いほど、いいと思う。
増えるほど良くなる、と一息で言う形です。It's good to have many. が事実なのに対し、The more ~, the better は連動——二つが一緒に動くのが違い。The + 比較級, the + 比較級が骨組みで、the を落とさないのが要(× More you have, better)。

🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use expression
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
all the rage
「大流行して」
- Piercing eyes are all the rage right now.
- That game was all the rage last summer.
- Short jackets are all the rage again.
使い方は決まっていて、be動詞のうしろにそのまま置くだけ——Short jackets are all the rage again.the を落とさないのが型です(× all rage)。似た言い方がcatch on。こちらは「流行りだす」という動きで、広がっていく途中のほう——いま真っ盛りなのが all the rage、火が付きはじめたのが catch on と分けると混ざりません。
