Episode Summary

A hospital director who cannot bear how quickly the new psychiatrist has been taken to starts moving meeting times, spiking coffee and finally reporting him to the state as a spy — which goes about as well for him as one would expect. Meanwhile a class outing to the museum sets off in three buses, and only two of them make the last turn.

意味〜にこびへつらう

  • Just a bunch of annoying little pests trying to suck up to us.
  • He's always sucking up to the boss.

💡 気に入られようとして、へつらうという形です。be nice to ~ が親切なのに対し、suck up to ~ は見返り目当て——見ている側の悪口なのが違い。a suck-up なら名詞で「ごますり」。本人には言わない言葉です。

juicy gossip

意味とっておきの噂話

  • Wow, now there's some juicy gossip!
  • She always has the juiciest gossip.

💡 聞きごたえのある、きわどい噂という形です。news が情報なのに対し、juicy gossip は娯楽——人に話したくてたまらないのが違い。juicy は「汁気が多い」で、おいしそうという比喩。juicy detail / juicy story も同じ。

Use your inside voices.

意味室内の声で話しなさい。

  • All right, children, we'll arrive at the Berlint Museum at 10:00 sharp! Use your inside voices, please.
  • Use your inside voices — people are working.

💡 建物のなかにふさわしい声量にしなさいという形です。Be quiet! が命令なのに対し、Use your inside voices. は基準を示す——叱っていないのが違い。inside voice / outside voice は英語圏の子育ての決まり文句で、大人にも冗談で使えます。

意味落ち着きなさい

  • All right, children, simmer down.
  • Simmer down, everyone — one at a time.

💡 沸き立っているものを、静めるという形です。Be quiet が音量なのに対し、simmer down は興奮——気持ちのほうを鎮めるのが違い。simmer は「ぐつぐつ煮る」。沸騰から弱火へ落とすのが絵です。

意味無料で

  • You want a piece of doggie kibble? It's free of charge!
  • Delivery is free of charge.

💡 お代はいただきません、という形です。free だけでも通じますが、free of charge は改まった言い方——案内や表示に使うのが違い。charge が「請求」。at no charge もほぼ同じ意味です。

dream on

意味夢でも見てなさい

  • Simply doesn't mix with low status people, so dream on!
  • You think he'll apologize? Dream on.

💡 そんなことは起きない、と突き放す言い方です。No. が拒否なのに対し、Dream on. はからかい——相手の期待をあざ笑うのが違い。命令形なのに命令ではない、皮肉の定型です。

I consider ~ our rivals

意味〜はライバルだと思っている

  • I consider the other classes our rivals.
  • I consider them our rivals, not our partners.

💡 自分はそう位置づけている、と言う形です。They are our rivals. が事実なのに対し、I consider ~ our rivals は見方——ほかの見方もあると含むのが違い。consider + 目的語 + 名詞で、あいだに as は入れません(× consider them as rivals)。

意味施しを当てにする

  • What, are you expecting some kind of handout, too?
  • Don't come here expecting a handout.

💡 ただでもらえると思っているという形です。ask for ~ が要求なのに対し、expect a handout は当て込み——頼んでもいないのに待っているのが違い。handout は「配り物」で、授業の配布資料も同じ語です。

意味いつもどおりだね。

  • Just like always, huh?
  • Sandwiches again? Just like always, huh?

💡 変わりばえしないね、と軽く突く言い方です。Again? が指摘なのに対し、Just like always, huh? は納得ずみ——もう驚いていないのが違い。うしろの huh? が「だよね」という同意を求める形。

意味あの子、どうしたんだ?

  • What is her deal?
  • What's his deal today?

💡 相手の様子が読めない、と首をひねる形です。What's wrong? が心配なのに対し、What is her deal? は困惑——少し苛立っているのが違い。deal が「事情・魂胆」。What's the deal? なら「どういうこと?」。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第43話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

You realize (that) ~, right?(〜だって分かってるよね)

You realize we just passed by the museum, right?

気づいているはずだ、と念のため確かめる形です。Did you notice ~? が質問なのに対し、You realize ~, right? は確認——相手が気づいていないと疑っているのが違い。文末の right? が同意を求める合図で、やわらかい抗議にもなります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

There's no way + 主語 + could ever + 動詞の原形(〜できるはずがない)

There's no way a filthy commoner like you could ever dream of waltzing into his place.

可能性そのものを、頭から否定する形です。You can't ~ が不可なのに対し、There's no way ~ could ever ~ は全否定——ever が「いつであっても」を足すのが違い。There's no way (that) + 文が骨組みで、会話では that を落とします。

You didn't ~, did you?(〜してないよね?)

You didn't hear anything about me, did you?

していないと思いたい、と確かめる形です。Did you hear ~? が質問なのに対し、You didn't ~, did you? は願望まじり——していないでほしいのが違い。否定文には肯定の付加疑問を付けます。答え方に注意——聞いていなければ Noです。

simmer down

⭐ 遠足のバスで騒ぐ3年3組に、引率の先生がかけた一言。沸き立っているものを、火を弱めて静める——という形です。Be quiet が音量の話なのに対し、simmer down は興奮そのもの——気持ちのほうを鎮めているところが違います。だから、静かにしていても腹を立てている人にも使えます。鍵は simmer という料理の言葉。boil が「ぐらぐら沸騰する」のに対し、simmer は「ふつふつと弱火で煮る」状態です。沸騰から弱火へ落とす——それがそのまま「頭を冷やす」になっているわけで、怒りを表す英語が料理と地続きなのがおもしろいところ。He's simmering. なら「まだ腹の底で煮えている」という意味になります。紛らわしいのがsettle down。こちらは「落ち着く」全般で、騒がしさにも、暮らしぶりにも使えます(settle down and have kids=身を固める)。熱を冷ますのが simmer down、動きを止めて落ち着くのが settle down と分けると混ざりません。
