Episode Summary
An old schoolmaster walks onto a hijacked bus carrying rations, having decided that a feeble old man poses no threat, and ends up in a long argument with a man who once believed in non-violent resistance and lost a daughter along the way. The girl beside them keeps asking for more snacks, and it turns out she is not asking for herself.

💡 stalemate はチェスの「ステイルメイト」から「行き詰まり・膠着」。交渉・試合の報道で頻出です。

💡 withstand は「持ちこたえる」、prolonged は「長引いた」。硬い報道英語の組み合わせです。

表現pose as ~〜になりすます
💡 pose as ~ は「〜のふりをする・なりすます」。pretend to be ~ より計画的な偽装のニュアンスです。

The scammer posed as a bank employee.
詐欺師は銀行員になりすました。

訳万が一、正体がばれたらどうするのです？
表現blow one's cover正体がばれる
💡 cover は「隠れみの・偽の身分」。blow one's cover で「正体を暴く／ばれる」。on the chance ~（万一〜なら）も便利です。

You'll need to sign off on it.
訳こちらにサインをお願いします。
表現sign off on ~〜を承認する
💡 sign off on ~ は「〜に署名して承認する」。職場の決裁でよく使う句動詞です。
例文
The manager has to sign off on the budget.
予算はマネージャーの承認が要る。
Though, I suppose we need to make it appear like we tried to come to a peaceful resolution first.
訳もっとも、まずは平和的解決を試みたように見せる必要があるだろうな。
表現come to a peaceful resolution平和的に解決する
💡 resolution は「解決」。come to a resolution で「解決に至る」。外交・紛争の定番コロケーションです。

He’s completely lost his nerve.
訳あいつは完全に腰が引けている。
表現lose one's nerve弱気になる
💡 nerve は「度胸」。lose one's nerve で「おじけづく」。逆はhave the nerve to ~（図々しくも〜する）です。

訳いいか、夜陰に乗じて動く。

💡 under the cover of ~ は「〜に紛れて」。night / darkness と組む文語的な表現です。

訳全部、勝ち目のない戦いだよ。

💡 a losing battle は「負けが見えている戦い」。fight a losing battle の形で徒労をユーモラスに言えます。

〈上級〉立ち入り制限区域・容疑者を刺激する・こう着状態——場面を運ぶ言い回しを5個。Must-Know とは別枠の実用表現です。

Given ~, you must be aware that …（〜なのだから、…はご存じでしょう）Given you're an educator, you must be aware that Red Circus started out as a student movement demanding freedom and equality.
教育者なら、赤いサーカスが自由と平等を求める学生運動として始まったことはご存じだろう。
Given ~ は「〜であることを考えると」。you must be aware that ~ と組み、相手の立場を根拠に迫る型です。
他にも使える例：
If you wish to ~, I strongly suggest …（〜したいなら、…することを強く勧める）If you wish to avoid the same fate as the others, I strongly suggest you surrender before that happens.
仲間と同じ末路を避けたいなら、その前に投降することを強く勧める。
If you wish to ~ はIf you want to ~ の改まった形。I strongly suggest (that) ~ で丁寧だが有無を言わせない警告になります。
他にも使える例：
Don't ~. … instead.（〜するな。代わりに…しろ）Don't hold each other down. Help each other up instead.
足を引っ張り合うな。代わりに手を貸し合え。
否定の命令 + instead で「〜ではなく…を」と行動を置き換える型。hold down / help up の対比が印象的です。
