Episode Summary

A house tutor who has not slept properly since the hijacking finally goes to see a psychiatrist, and discovers that the thing he is most frightened of is not the men with guns. Elsewhere his colleagues drag a co-worker out for after-work drinks and spend the evening comparing complaints about their husbands, and three children argue about whether space is worth visiting at all.

意味まったくの見当違いだ

  • The idea that "you'll be fine because you're an adult" and "you have a weak mind" couldn't be further from the truth.
  • That claim couldn't be further from the truth.

💡 真実からこれ以上遠くなりようがないという形です。That's wrong. が否定なのに対し、couldn't be further from the truth は全否定——距離でたとえているのが違い。could を否定した比較級で最上級の意味を作る型で、I couldn't agree more(大賛成)も同じ作りです。

I can empathize.

意味気持ちはよく分かります。

  • My daughter was also involved that day, so I can empathize.
  • I've been through it myself, so I can empathize.

💡 相手の側に立って、同じように感じる形です。sympathize が同情なのに対し、empathize は共感——上から見ていないのが違い。em(中に)+ path(感情)という作りで、相手の中に入るのが元の意味。with ~ を足せば対象も言えます。

意味喉に骨が刺さったような

  • Like a bone stuck in my throat.
  • The question sat there like a bone stuck in my throat.

💡 取れずに引っかかり続けているという形です。be worried が心配なのに対し、a bone stuck in one's throat は違和感——正体が分からないのが違い。日本語の「喉に刺さった小骨」とほぼそのまま重なる言い方です。

意味日常生活に支障をきたす

  • These symptoms have been interfering with your daily life, have they not?
  • The pain started to interfere with his daily life.

💡 ふだんの営みに、割りこんで邪魔をする形です。be hard が苦しさなのに対し、interfere with ~ は妨げ——できていたことができないのが違い。with を落とさないのが要(× interfere your life)。医療と職場の定型です。

The only way forward is to ~

意味前に進む道は〜しかない

  • The only way forward is to face your fear.
  • The only way forward is to talk to them directly.

💡 ほかに進路はない、と一本に絞る形です。You should ~ が助言なのに対し、The only way forward is to ~ は必然——戻る道がないのが違い。forward が「この先」。the way out なら「抜け出す道」になります。

意味感謝を言葉にする

  • You need to properly express your gratitude for her.
  • He never learned how to express his gratitude.

💡 ありがたいと思っていることを、形にする形です。say thanks が一言なのに対し、express one's gratitude は正式——きちんと伝えるのが違い。gratitude は数えない名詞。スピーチと手紙でそのまま使えます。

acknowledge one's role

意味自分の役目を認める

  • And you should acknowledge your role in the household as well.
  • He finally acknowledged his role in the failure.

💡 目をそらさず、自分の分を認める形です。admit が白状なのに対し、acknowledge は受け止め——責任だけでなく持ち場も指すのが違い。ac + knowledge という作りで、「知っていると示す」のが元。

意味生半可なことではない

  • Maintaining a healthy relationship is no easy task.
  • Rebuilding trust is no easy task.

💡 簡単ではない、と強く言う形です。not easy が単純な否定なのに対し、no easy task は言い切り——no + 名詞のほうが強いのが違い。He's no fool.(彼は決して馬鹿ではない)も同じ強め方です。

意味時間とともに自然に治まる

  • Most cases resolve naturally over time.
  • Most disputes resolve naturally over time.

💡 手を加えなくても、じきに収まるという形です。get better が回復なのに対し、resolve は決着——問題そのものが消えるのが違い。resolve は自動詞でも使えるのが要で、症状・炎症・対立と組みます。

意味顔が広い

  • He must have a wide network.
  • She has a wide network in the industry.

💡 つながる相手が、広く行きわたっている形です。know many people が事実なのに対し、have a wide network は資産——使える人脈として見ているのが違い。network が「網の目」。a wide / strong / global network と形容詞を替えて使えます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第47話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Do you remember ~ at all?(〜を少しでも覚えていますか)

Do you remember your dreams at all?

覚えていなくても構わない、と含ませて聞く形です。Do you remember ~? が確認なのに対し、~ at all? を足すと期待値が下がるのが違い。at all は疑問文で「少しでも」、否定文では「まったく〜ない」——同じ形で意味が変わります。

What sort of things have you + 過去分詞?(どんなことを〜してきましたか)

What sort of things have you talked about lately?

中身を限定せず、広く話させる形です。Did you talk? が有無なのに対し、What sort of things ~? は内容——話したこと自体は前提なのが違い。what sort of ~ はwhat kind of ~ の少し硬い形。面接や聞き取りで重宝します。

It'll take longer to ~ if you keep ~ing(〜し続けると、よけいに時間がかかる)

But it'll take longer to recover if you keep avoiding it.

いまのやり方の代償を、先に示す形です。Don't avoid it. が禁止なのに対し、It'll take longer if ~ は損得——相手に選ばせるのが違い。keep + 動詞ingは「〜し続ける」で、to は入りません(× keep to avoid)。

⭐ 「大人なんだから平気なはず」と自分を責める患者に、ロイドが返した一言。真実から、これ以上遠くなりようがない——という形です。That's wrong. が「それは違う」というただの否定なのに対し、couldn't be further from the truth は距離のたとえ——もっとも遠い地点にあると言い切るところが違います。作りをほどくと、じつは簡単です。could を否定した比較級で、「これ以上〜になりようがない」=最上級を作っているだけ。英語がとても好きな型で、仲間がいくつもあります——I couldn't agree more.(大賛成です)、It couldn't be better.(申し分ありません)、I couldn't care less.(どうでもいい)。否定なのに、いちばん強い肯定になるのが面白いところです。使うときは主語を「その考え・その話」に置くのが自然——The rumor couldn't be further from the truth.相手そのものを否定しないで済むので、やんわり訂正したい場面にも向きます。紛らわしいのがThat's not true.。こちらは「事実ではない」という平らな否定で、強さも距離感もない——思い違いを正すのが couldn't be further from the truth、事実だけを否定するのが That's not true と分けると混ざりません。
