🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第48話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

No one sane would + 動詞の原形(まともな人間なら〜しない)

No one sane would choose to go up against them.

やる人間は正気ではない、と言い切る形です。It's dangerous. が評価なのに対し、No one sane would ~ は全否定——例外を認めないのが違い。No one + would の仮定法で、sane(正気の)を挟むと一段強くなります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

I suspect that ~(〜ではないかとにらんでいる)

証拠はないが、そう見ていると示す形です。I think ~ が意見なのに対し、I suspect that ~ は嫌疑——相手にとって都合の悪い推測なのが違い。suspect のうしろに that 節を置くのが基本で、suspect 人 of ~ing なら「人が〜したと疑う」。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

the powers that be

You'll have to take it up with the powers that be.「上に言ってくれ」という、やんわりした責任逃れにもなります。紛らわしいのがupper management。こちらは「経営陣」という具体的な役職の集まりで、組織図に載っているほう——顔の見えないのが the powers that be、実在の役職が upper management と分けると混ざりません。

★★★★★ 5.0 / 5

第48話は一本立てですが、前半と後半でまるごと色が変わります。その後半——WISE のブリーフィング、国家保安局の動き、そして宝石の色を使った裏切り者あぶり出し——上級版はここに絞りました。

見出しはthe powers that be / maintain complete deniability / get wind of ~ / go into hiding / a deep cover operative のように、諜報の言い回しを中心に据えました。語彙は tailing / decoded / deduce / purge / gemstone のような作戦と暗号の語で揃えています。

この回でとくに効くのは、言い切る英語です。No one sane would + 動詞の原形(まともなら〜しない)、I suspect that ~(〜ではとにらんでいる)、Regardless, it's important that ~(いずれにせよ)——例外を消す・覚悟を評する・話を締める型が並んでいます。
