🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第49話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

If I recall, ~(記憶が確かなら〜)

If I recall, the two of us worked on a mission together before this.

思い違いかもしれないと断ってから話す形です。I remember ~ が断定なのに対し、If I recall, ~ は保険——訂正の余地を残すのが違い。recall は remember より硬い語。if I recall correctly(略して IIRC)という書き言葉の形もあります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

I'd imagine (that) ~(おそらく〜でしょう)

根拠を並べずに、見立てだけ置く形です。Maybe が不確かなのに対し、I'd imagine ~ は経験からの推測——そう外れないと思っているのが違い。would を入れることで断定を一段やわらげています。that は省くのがふつうです。

他にも使える例:

最悪の場合を先に認めて、それでもと続ける形です。We must do it. が義務なのに対し、Even if ~, still ~ は覚悟——代償を承知しているのが違い。still が「それでもなお」で、助動詞のうしろに置くのが位置の決まりです。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

I can't shake the feeling that ~

⭐ 段取りどおりに進んでいるのに、ガスコインの胸に残った引っかかり。払っても払っても、その感じが消えてくれない——という形です。I think ~ が「〜だと思う」という判断なのに対し、I can't shake the feeling that ~ は直感——理屈では消せないところが違います。だから、根拠を聞かれても答えられなくていいのがこの言い方の便利なところ。鍵は shake という動詞。shake off が「振り払う」で、まとわりついてくるものを体から落とす絵です——shake off a cold(風邪を抜く)、shake off a tail(尾行をまく)。その shake が can't で否定されているので、「振り払えない」=「消えない」になります。うしろの that は省くのがふつうで、I can't shake the feeling something's wrong. のようにそのまま文をつなげます。紛らわしいのがhave a feeling。

見出しはbeat ~ to the punch / I can't shake the feeling that ~ / take the bait / lose track of ~ / commit ~ to memory のように、尾行と観察の言い回しを中心に据えました。語彙は tint / footprints / disguised / reacting / retreating のような追う側と追われる側の語で揃えています。

この回でとくに効くのは、断定を避ける英語です。If I recall, ~(記憶が確かなら)、I'd imagine (that) ~(おそらく〜でしょう)、Even if ~, 主語 + still need to …——保険をかける・見立てを置く・それでもと続ける型が並んでいます。

総合難易度:★★★★★(尾行と観察の英語が中心)/英語学習価値:★★★★★(人を見る仕事にそのまま移せます)/おすすめ度:★★★★★。jump to conclusions / a soft spot / a hunch on my part まで扱う、スパイファミリー第49話の上級版です。
