🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第49話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。
PATTERN 1
Let's play a game to see ~(〜を決める遊びをしよう)
Let's play a game to see...
どっちが上か、遊びで決めよう。
勝負の形にして、楽しく決める言い方です。Let's decide. が決定なのに対し、play a game to see ~ は遊び——結果を軽く扱うのが違い。see のうしろは間接疑問で、who / which / how many などを続けます(× to see who is winner → to see who wins)。
他にも使える例:
- Let's play a game to see who finishes first.(誰が先に終わるか競争しよう)
- Let's play a game to see how many you can name.(いくつ言えるかゲームにしよう)
PATTERN 2
a special move known as ~(〜と呼ばれる必殺技)

獲物を襲うとき、デスロールと呼ばれる特別な動きを使います。
正式な呼び名を、あとから添える形です。called ~ が口語なのに対し、known as ~ は硬い——世間で通っている名を示すのが違い。known as は分詞で、直前の名詞を後ろから説明します——解説板と図鑑の定番です。
他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use expression
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
the king of beasts
「百獣の王」
- The male is distinguished by his mane and is also known as the king of beasts.
- The lion has always been the king of beasts.
- In fables, the king of beasts is never the strongest.
⭐ 動物園のライオンの解説板を、アーニャが「けもののおうさま」と読み上げた場面。けもののなかの王、という称号——という形です。the strongest animal が「いちばん強い動物」という比較なのに対し、the king of beasts は称号——昔から決まっている呼び名なので、実際に強いかどうかは関係ありません。beast という語がポイントです。animal が生き物一般を指すのに対し、beast は「四つ足のけもの」——古風で、物語の言葉。Beauty and the Beast(美女と野獣)の beast がそれです。the king of ~ という形は生き物以外にも広く使えて、その分野で王様格のものを指します——the king of fruits(果物の王様)、the king of instruments(楽器の王様=パイプオルガン)。自分で作っても通じるのが便利なところです。解説板の英語はbe distinguished by ~(〜で見分けがつく)、known as ~(〜と呼ばれる)と、形が決まっているので、動物園や博物館の英語表示は、じつは読みやすい教材になります。
