🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

beat the clock

  • Way to beat the clock.
  • We beat the clock by about a minute.

Way to ~ は「よくやった」という褒め言葉で、Way to go! race against the clock(時間と競争する)も同じ clock で、対にして覚えると使い分けが早い。

02

get the pre-game jitters

  • Is it weird that I'm starting to get the pre-game jitters over here?
  • I get the pre-game jitters before every presentation.

03

Break a leg.

  • It's about time I went backstage. Break a leg.
  • Break a leg out there tonight.

04

catch ~'s eye

  • Good chance to catch his eye.
  • The headline caught my eye.

05

spring ~ on 人

  • Springing it on me is not cool.
  • Don't spring a new deadline on me.

06

pick up steam

  • This competition is new, but it's starting to pick up steam in these circles.
  • The campaign picked up steam after the second week.

lose steam(勢いが落ちる)も対で使えます。

07

be a tough act to follow

  • She's a tough act to follow.
  • Last year's chair was a tough act to follow.

08

be laudable

  • His attempt was laudable.
  • The goal is laudable, even if the plan isn't.

09

be in a league of one's own

  • This girl is in a league of her own.
  • As a translator she's in a league of her own.

one's own のところは主語に合わせて変える(his own / their own)。

10

a total taboo

  • Not playing the score the way it's written is a total taboo.
  • Discussing salaries was a total taboo there.

a taboo subject / taboo words

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

It'd be one thing if ~, but …(〜ならまだしも、…だ)

It'd be one thing If this were a recital, but it's a contest.

PATTERN 2

If you'd known ~, you wouldn't have + 過去分詞(知っていたら〜しなかっただろう)

But if you'd known about it, you wouldn't have come.

you'd は you had の短縮で、主節の you'd(you would)と見分けがつきにくいのが難所——後ろが known か have かで判じます。

PATTERN 3

Whoever ~, …(〜

Whoever she is, I'm a big fan.

no matter who と言い換え可。
