🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第43話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

The closer ~, the 比較級 …(近づくほど…)

The closer we get to the center of the swirl, the thicker the poison will be.

二つの比較級を対にして、連動を表す形です。それぞれの前に the が必要で、前半が条件、後半が結果になります。The closer / The longer / The more は特に出番の多い出だし。未来のことでも、前半は現在形で受けます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

It must not have + 過去分詞(〜しなかったのだろう)

That means it must not have spread to wherever she's broadcasting from.

目の前の事実から、過去を推し量る形です。must have + 過去分詞が「〜したに違いない」、否定は must not have + 過去分詞。会話では must've / mustn't have と縮めます。推理のことばとして覚えておくと便利です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Normally it would ~(ふつうなら〜のはず)

Normally it would spread out more, right?

いつもの姿と、いま目の前の姿を比べる形です。would が「本来なら」という含みを作ります。Normally / Usually / Ordinarily のどれでも可。異変に気づいたときの言い出しとして、そのまま使えます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

Thank goodness.

⭐ 助けを探して走った先で先生の姿を見つけた、出久の第一声。goodness は God の言いかえ——神の名をそのまま口にしないために生まれた形です。Thank God. とほぼ同じ意味ですが、宗教色がうすく、誰にでも使えます。Thank goodness for ~ と for を足せば、何に救われたのかまで言えます——Thank goodness for the extra day.

この 中級版 では、get on one's back / Hang on tight. / Thank goodness. / I get the feeling ~ を中心に据えました。
